Test: Do I have bulimia?

The following test gives you initial indications of whether you might be suffering from bulimia (binge-purge disorder). Bulimia is a serious eating disorder characterised by recurring episodes of binge eating followed by weight-control measures.

Possible signs of bulimia can include:

  • repeated episodes of uncontrollable eating,
  • strong fear of gaining weight,
  • compensatory behaviours after eating,
  • excessive preoccupation with shape and weight,
  • feelings of shame and secrecy around eating.

Bulimia is treatable, and the earlier you seek help, the better the chances of recovery. This test can help you recognise initial signs and assess whether you should seek professional support.

Bulimia Test: 7 Questions

All questions refer to the last 14 days. The answer options are scaled like a grading system — the first option counts as one point, the last as five. Choose one answer per question and click Evaluate Now at the end.

1. After large meals, do you try to make yourself vomit?

2. Do you have regular binge episodes during which you eat large amounts?

3. During a binge, do you feel you lose control over your behaviour?

4. Do you use means such as laxatives or diuretics to control your weight?

5. Do you exercise excessively to prevent weight gain?

6. Does your mood depend strongly on the number on the scales?

7. Do you repeatedly fast in order to get your weight under control?

This online screening is not a diagnostic tool. Only a trained medical professional — such as a doctor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist — can advise you on the next steps.
