Test: Am I at risk of burnout?

Do you know your risk of developing burnout? The questions in this early-warning test provide insight into whether your personality and life circumstances put you at risk. Burnout usually develops gradually and is often only recognised when exhaustion is already advanced.

Personality traits and behaviours that can increase the risk of burnout:

  • pronounced perfectionism and high expectations of yourself,
  • difficulty saying "no" and setting personal boundaries,
  • strong need to please others,
  • neglected work-life balance,
  • insufficient self-care and rest,
  • an excessive sense of responsibility for other people or tasks.

Burnout is not a character flaw — it is the result of sustained overload that depletes your personal resources. The sooner you recognise your risk factors, the better you can counteract them.

All questions refer to the last 14 days. The answer options are scaled like a grading system — the first option counts as one point, the last as five. Choose one answer per question and click Evaluate Now at the end.

2. Do you often feel you have to do everything yourself for it to be done properly?

3. Do you often worry about disappointing others with your behaviour?

4. Do you put pressure on yourself not to make mistakes?

5. Do you get very upset with yourself when things don't go to plan?

6. Do you feel responsible for the wellbeing of your family, friends or colleagues?

7. Do you rarely allow yourself rest or time alone?

8. Do you neglect your own needs because you let others go first?

9. Do you only work or see a doctor when you really cannot do otherwise?

10. After work, do you often keep thinking about professional tasks and struggle to relax?

11. Do you feel you always have to be responsible for everything in order for it to work?

12. Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed and exhausted by your tasks?

13. Do you feel your efforts often go insufficiently appreciated?

14. Do you feel increasingly drained and less capable?

This online screening is not a diagnostic tool. Only a trained medical professional — such as a doctor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist — can advise you on the next steps.
