Test: Am I too selfish?

With this psychological test you can find out how strongly developed your selfishness is, and whether it would be better for you and your mental wellbeing to find a more balanced relationship between your own needs and those of others. This is not about judgement — it is about self-reflection and personal growth.

Possible signs of excessive selfishness can include:

  • difficulty empathising with the feelings and needs of others,
  • a tendency, in conflicts, to focus primarily on one's own perspective,
  • trouble compromising or putting one's own interests aside,
  • a strong need for control and for asserting one's own ideas,
  • little willingness to help others when there is no personal advantage in it.

A certain degree of healthy self-interest is important for our psychological wellbeing. It's about finding a balance between protecting your own interests and being considerate of others. This test helps you locate where you stand on that spectrum.

Selfishness Test: 10 Questions

All questions refer to the last 14 days. The answer options are scaled like a grading system — the first option counts as one point, the last as five. Choose one answer per question and click Evaluate Now at the end.

1. Do you dislike concerning yourself with other people's problems?

2. Do you believe that everyone has to look after themselves to get through life?

3. Do you consider it necessary to prioritise your own goals in order to be successful?

4. Is it important to you always to be the best?

5. Would you describe yourself as a lone wolf?

6. Do you speak your mind even when others can't handle it?

7. Do you care little about what others think of you?

8. Do you make sure that you don't get the short end in any situation?

9. Do you feel that people are themselves responsible for voicing their needs when they want something?

10. Do you rarely consider how your behaviour might affect others?

This online screening is not a diagnostic tool. Only a trained medical professional — such as a doctor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist — can advise you on the next steps.
