Test: How ambitious am I?

By ambition, we describe the pursuit of goals and achievements in various areas of life. This can relate to professional aspects such as career, power and influence, as well as to private goals — personal development, sporting performance, or the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Signs of potentially excessive ambition:

  • difficulty switching off and relaxing,
  • the constant feeling of not having achieved enough,
  • neglect of relationships and free time in favour of goals,
  • extreme self-criticism when goals are not reached,
  • trouble enjoying successes because the next goal is already in focus.

With ambition, the right measure matters. Healthy ambition motivates us and leads to personal growth, while exaggerated ambition can lead to stress, relationship problems and dissatisfaction. Too little ambition, on the other hand, can leave us living below our potential.

1. Once I've reached a goal, I immediately look for a new one.

2. Spending time on activities that don't move me forward feels like a waste.

3. It motivates me to achieve things that others couldn't.

4. I work evenings or weekends to reach my goals.

5. I plan precisely by when I want to reach my goals.

6. I learn from my mistakes to do better next time.

7. I set high standards for myself and work hard to meet them.

8. Challenges motivate me to become even more ambitious.

9. Setbacks spur me on to perform even more.

10. I strive to keep developing and improving myself.

This online screening is not a diagnostic tool. Only a trained medical professional — such as a doctor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist — can advise you on the next steps.
