Test: Optimism and a Positive Outlook on Life

Do you ask yourself: "Do I see the glass as half full or half empty?", "How do I deal with setbacks?", "When is one optimistic?" or "Do I look at the future with confidence?" These questions shed light on your underlying optimism.

Typical features of optimistic people are:

  • the ability to see opportunities even in difficult situations,
  • a fundamentally positive expectation of the future,
  • a constructive approach to challenges and setbacks,
  • the belief that one can influence one's own life.

With this test you can assess your underlying optimism and learn how you typically deal with various life situations.

Optimism Test: 15 Questions

All questions refer to the last 14 days. The answer options are scaled like a grading system — the first option counts as one point, the last as five. Choose one answer per question and click Evaluate Now at the end.

1. In difficult situations, do you often see a way to make something positive out of it?

2. Do you believe that challenges help you develop?

3. Do you think that problems usually have a solution?

4. Do you feel motivated, even when a goal seems hard to reach?

5. Do you trust that things will turn out for the best in the end?

6. Do you approach new situations with confidence, even when they're unknown?

7. Do you feel that you yourself can have a positive influence on your life?

8. Do you focus more on what's going well than on what's going wrong?

9. Do you believe you can get back on your feet after a setback?

10. Do you try to encourage others when they are down?

11. Do you see challenges as opportunities rather than letting them discourage you?

12. Do you often think the future will bring you good things?

13. Do you actively look for solutions instead of complaining about problems?

14. Do you feel optimistic even when external circumstances are difficult?

15. Do you consider yourself a person with a positive outlook on life?

This online screening is not a diagnostic tool. Only a trained medical professional — such as a doctor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist — can advise you on the next steps.
