Test: Fear of Urinating (Paruresis)

Do you struggle to urinate in public restrooms? Do you avoid urinating in the presence of others? Our test helps you assess whether you may suffer from paruresis.

Typical signs of paruresis can include:

  • Strong fear and tension when trying to use public restrooms,
  • Avoidance of situations that might require urinating in public,
  • Using only locked, fully enclosed toilet cubicles.

This test lets you reflect on how strongly the fear of urinating influences your life. Please note that it does not replace a professional diagnosis.

Fear of Urinating Test: 7 Questions

All questions refer to the last 14 days. The answer options are scaled like a grading system — the first option counts as one point, the last as five. Choose one answer per question and click Evaluate Now at the end.

1. Do you mentally prepare for the possibility of having trouble in public restrooms?

2. Do you feel uncomfortable when you are next to other people in a public restroom?

3. Are you afraid that others might notice if you have trouble urinating?

4. Do you worry about losing control of your bladder and others noticing?

5. Are you afraid of being judged or laughed at when you take longer to urinate?

6. Do you avoid places where you would have to use public restrooms, such as restaurants or events?

7. Do you plan your fluid intake so that you do not have to rely on public restrooms?

This online screening is not a diagnostic tool. Only a trained medical professional — such as a doctor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist — can advise you on the next steps.
