How to build a successful online practice as a psychologist or psychotherapeutic practitioner — while living wherever you choose.
I still remember the moment I decided to take my practice fully online. No office, no fixed hours, no particular place. Just me, my laptop, and clients from all over the world. Today, more than five years later, that is exactly my everyday life.
The path here wasn't always straight. I tried a lot, discarded some of it, and slowly understood what really works. If you're just starting out and don't know where to begin, I can show you a path — not a theoretical one, but one I have walked myself.
Building a psychological online practice isn't a sprint — it's a process. The phases I've gone through myself:
A niche is the essential. Whoever tries to address everyone reaches no one. Expats? Couples? Highly sensitive people? The self-employed? The clearer your niche, the faster your practice will grow.
Your website is your most important marketing tool. With the right SEO strategy, clients come to you — without paid advertising.
A GDPR-compliant platform, professional liability insurance, mandatory website information, legally sound wording — set up properly once.
Free first consultations, review platforms, social media, directories — I'll show you what really works.
Workshops, newsletter, waiting lists — at some point you stop working only by the hour and start building structures that also work without you.
"An online practice doesn't appear overnight. For me it took four years — four years in which I kept going, discarded things and rethought them. In the end, what mattered wasn't talent — it was persistence."
Patric Pförtner, M.Sc. Psychologist
Most psychologists and practitioners have a website — but it is hardly ever found. Because the rules of the game are changing fast right now:
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity — anyone not optimised for AI-driven search is simply no longer recommended.
Publishing articles every month, uploading videos, maintaining content — all of it feeds into the algorithm. Those who stop, fall behind.
My Agency
Psychological marketing & web development
As a psychologist and web developer I've built an agency that unites both worlds. We build websites for therapists, practitioners and counsellors that don't just look beautiful — they get found, build trust and win clients.
Together we develop a realistic plan — which niche, which clientele, which offering.
I help you build the right website — no guessing, but based on experience. What works, what doesn't, and why.
Tax, legal and practical questions — what you need to sort out as a psychologist or practitioner working remotely.
For those who have already started and want to expand their business systematically — more clients, more stability.
Frequently Asked Questions
I've been doing it from Bulgaria for years. Online counselling is location-independent — as long as you use a GDPR-compliant platform, your tax situation is clear, and you don't need a state-funded seat, it is possible. I'll show you exactly what to watch out for.
Google rates websites by E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness). On top of that, AI search tools like ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews only recommend sources that are technically well structured and substantively strong. Anyone who doesn't understand this becomes invisible — no matter how good the counselling.
The honest answer: it takes time — and that is okay. Anyone who promises you that you can live fully off your online practice within three months is lying to you. Realistic numbers from my experience:
Many never make it through this period — not because they aren't good, but because being self-employed means never stopping. Illness, exhaustion, blows of fate — all of that takes time you don't have. Whoever falls ill doesn't work; whoever doesn't work doesn't market; whoever doesn't market doesn't grow. This risk is real and is rarely spoken about openly.
On top of that: you have to understand how much you need to invest in marketing to hit a particular revenue target. Only when you know that — when you know, for instance, that €300 per month in ads reliably brings you X new enquiries — can you really scale. Without this knowledge you work blind. Realistically, plan on €200 to €1,000 per month for advertising to reliably gain reach — independent of organic search traffic.
And that is exactly the problem with relying purely on SEO: a single Google update can throw a well-built, solid website out of the search results overnight. AI search is additionally changing how people search for therapists at all. Anyone relying only on organic visibility carries a risk they can hardly control.
My clear recommendation: don't quit your salaried job in a hurry. Use the security of employment to build alongside it. Only when you know what your marketing costs, what it brings in, and how stable demand is — then is the moment to take the leap. Not before. That protects your mental health and gives you the freedom to grow strategically, instead of accepting every client out of financial pressure.
